Riding alone or with a group?
Whole Enchilada - Moab, Utah
I ride alone 90% of the time. I have always enjoyed riding by myself, not only that I can choose where to ride but how fast or slow I go, and how often I stop to take a deep breath and just admire the beauty around me. For me riding is about disconnecting from the “noise” of everyday life. The downside to solo rides, is that I usually take it a bit easier on difficult trails because I don’t want to risk getting hurt on my own. With that being said, as much as I like my solo rides, I noticed I don’t push myself enough. Riding within my limits and riding overly cautious are two different approaches! I do know my skill level and I am fully aware of my limits. Still, there is this hunger for more that I can not resist. I want to improve and ride better without hurting myself too much while I learn. This is where I find group riding so motivating and exciting! The important part is your group should be more advanced if you want to progress. I was lucky to find this awesome group of ladies who motivate me to work harder on my skills, more than I would do on my own. I always appreciate their tips and instructions for proper position on the bike or foot placement or easiest line when going through challenging obstacles. Also, when riding with different people, you get new perspective on your local trails. You are used to riding the same trial on you own, but when riding with a group, you can follow their line and it could be more smooth or more challenging depending on how much you want to push past your limits. Since I started riding with these ladies, I do see a noticeable improvement and I always look forward to our weekly group ride at the White Ranch. Belcher Hill is probably the toughest climb around Denver. Steep, loose and some tricky rock features that are impossible to get through but once you finally get to the top, there is your reward - the Longhorn. One of the best DH trails around. It’s fast, flowy, technical with steep rock chutes and lots of bermed turns. You need the right amount of commitment because there is no way you can stop half way as a lot of these features go immediately to the next. It is unbelievably rewarding to get to the bottom from both climbing and descending perspective. I don’t think I would ride most of these features if I would be there on my own. These girls offer advice, support and awesome positive attitude. I really enjoy every ride with them and naturally these girls became my friends. How wouldn’t they? We share one amazing passion!!
